Mommy took me to the beach one afternoon last week. She set up a cabana for me and let me play in the sand. I thought the sand was so cool. I loved the way it felt slipping through my fingers and rubbing against my toes. I was also really intrigued by all of the birds walking and squawking about. I was much more interested in watching the birds than having a photo shoot, but of course that didn't stop Mommy from taking a jillion pictures anyway. Mommy took me by the water and let me watch the waves too. I was not happy when she let the waves hit my feet, though. Too cold! I'd rather hang out in the warm sand, thank you!

A Swimming Success
A couple Saturdays ago, Mommy and Daddy lathered me up in sunscreen and took me to a public swimming pool in El Segundo. The weather was warm and the water was chilly. There were lots of other kids there and everyone was splashing about and seemingly having fun. I sat on the step for a while and then Mommy and Daddy took turns holding me and swishing me around. It was sorta fun I guess and I humored them with a couple smiles. I was more in the mood to be a casual observer, though. I definitely didn't want to get my hair wet. Thank goodness Mommy and Daddy knew better than to dunk me. I would have hated to make a scene.
Mommy took me to another pool a couple days later. This one was indoors and really warm. A lot of other babies were there with their parents and we sang some songs and played some fun games in the water. I got to keep my head above water again, so I was content.
Overall, I think swimming is alright. I'd be open to giving it another try.
Hope you enjoy the pics of me in my cute swim suit!

Eating Solids
After my pediatrician's visit last Wednesday, I had my first solid meal of rice cereal! It was actually still pretty liquidy all mixed up with breast milk, but whatever. More liquidy = more messy = more fun! I was so excited about eating something new that I could hardly sit still or stop flapping my arms. Click on the link below to check out a video from my first solid meal:

I now have one meal of rice cereal a day. I'm not as excited about it anymore, though. Is it me or is rice cereal just kind of blah? I haven't actually swallowed much of it yet because it's more fun to spit it all out. Maybe I'll start to actually eat when the food tastes a little better. In a few days, I get to start oatmeal. Doesn't sound much more enticing than rice cereal, but wish me luck. After a week of oatmeal, I'll get into some more interesting sounding stuff like fruits and vegetables. Get excited!
My Half Birthday
Can you believe it? I'm six months old! Mommy and Grandpa T took me to see Dr. Shaw, my pediatrician, last Wednesday for my six-month check up. Here are my new stats: I weigh 13 pounds, 10 ounces and I am 24 and 1/4 inches long. The doc says that I'm smaller than about 90% of babies my age, but that I'm growing at a fine rate and that I look perfect. I enjoy being cute and petite, but the doctor said that my size now won't necessarily reflect my size as an adult. I could have a growth spurt any time and be super tall like Daddy. Mommy mentioned to the doc that all of my thick, dark hair is coming out and Dr. Shaw said it's normal. She said that I'll lose my newborn hair and baby hair will grow in its place. So far, my baby hair is thin and light reddish brown to match my eyebrows. I may end up looking as Irish as my name sounds - I'll be a baby leprechaun!
I showed Dr. Shaw a couple of my latest skills: sitting up with no support and pushing up on my arms from my tummy. Dr. Shaw was very impressed and she loved my smile. She asked Mommy if I charmed strangers with my smile and Mommy told her that I charm them all the time and that it's hard to get out the grocery store because so many people want to come talk to me and look at me. All was lovely until the nurse came in with the needles. They get me every time! I was a tough girl, though, and I only cried for less than a minute after my shots. Mommy and Grandpa T were very proud of me.
I'm very excited about being six months old. Sitting up has added a whole new dimension of fun to play time. And best of all, I get to start eating solid foods now! I'll post a pic and video of me eating solid food presently. Taking a Stand
Some late breaking news: I stood up at music class on Thursday, July 30th! We were all sitting around on the floor banging on the big drum (about 1.5 feet high and 3.5 feet in diameter) and I got so excited that I just pulled myself up from sitting on Mommy's leg to stand leaning against the drum. I was quite pleased with myself and everyone else was surprised and impressed. I guess it's a pretty advanced maneuver for my age. I may still be mastering the trick of sitting up on my own, but that shouldn't mean I can't dabble with another trick. Mommy tried to recreate the moment at home for Daddy and had me lean on my toy chest. I entertained that idea just long enough to get a couple photos, and then I decided I was more comfortable sitting. For now, I think I prefer to stand only when I play the drum.
P.S. Mommy meant to post this update earlier, but I've been keeping her pretty busy.
